Tonsil looks like it is ripped open -- help?

I have been having a sore throat and swollen glands on the left side of my mouth for the past week. I went to the doctor yesterday because I looked at my tonsils and I could see what appeared to be a small "cavity" in it -- I could actually see inside the tonsil.
