Vomiting - can't keep food/drink down. Doctors are stumped.

My friend has been vomiting and cannot keep any food or water down lately. He is an ex alcoholic and 36 years old. He has been to the hospital numerous times in the past two months and they initially put him on an drip as he was dehydrated when he arrived.
